GIWA

Title: GIWA Build-it-yourself Souvenir

Purpose of the Design: GIWA is a do-it-yourself souvenir. It is sold flat and the tourists assemble the pieces themselves. The material is extremely tough, recycled rubber, making it ideal to ship in luggage, taking up very little space when flat. GIWA's form is referential to historical Korean architecture. Specifically, it embodies the essence of architecture of the nobility. While it is referential, it is not an exact copy of a specific building. Instead it captures the spirit and beauty of traditional architecture from Korea. This is accomplished in both overall form and construction technique. GIWA is made by die-cutting a sheet of rubber. The base piece is made of a single piece that is folded and joined to create a box with legs. This novel joining method creates a strong yet simple joint that assembles as easily as buttoning a shirt. The lid is made of three identical pieces that are joined together to make the roof-like lid.
